FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM

Required: Two units of Fine and/or Practical Arts and/or Foreign Language
Recommended: Two - three units for college-bound students
 
 
German I
 
Grades: 9, 10, 11,12
Duration: Year
Prerequisite: None
 

A course intended to develop communication and comprehension skills.  Emphasis is placed on acquisition of vocabulary and basic grammatical structures, as well as introduction to the culture of German-speaking lands.

 
 
German II
 
Grades: 10, 11, 12
Duration: Year
Prerequisite: D- or better in German I
 

A continuation of German I with increased complexity of vocabulary and grammatical structures.  Students will be introduced to more in-depth reading and writing, including shorter texts by native German-speaking authors/speakers.

 
 
German III
 
Grades: 11, 12
Duration: Year
Prerequisite: C+ or better in German II.
 

This course is designed for students who have achieved a higher level of proficiency and who desire to increase that proficiency through study of various literary genres, historical periods, geography, fine arts, social issues, and current events.  Emphasis is placed on higher level receptive (reading and listening) and productive (writing and speaking) skills.

 
 
German IV
 
Grade: 12

Prerequisite: B- or better in German III and teacher permission
 
A continuation of German III.  There is an emphasis on mastering higher levels of writing and speaking, focusing on mastering grammatical concepts and increasing vocabulary.  Students will be expected to perform independent study of topics addressed in German III.
  
 
Spanish I
 
Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12

Prerequisite: None
 
A course designed to introduce students to basic vocabulary and grammatical structures.  Students will begin to develop in the four linguistic skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  There will also be an introduction to the cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries.
 
 
Spanish II
 
Grades: 10, 11, 12
Duration: Year
Prerequisite: D- or better in Spanish I
 
A continuation of Spanish I with increased complexity of vocabulary and grammatical structures.  Students will continue to develop in the four skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  The cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries will be explored further, with a special emphasis on holiday celebrations.
 
 
Spanish III
 
Grades 10, 11, 12
Duration: Year
Prerequisite: C+ or better in Spanish II
 
A course designed to expand students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while learning advanced grammatical structures.  Students continue to build their vocabulary and knowledge of the cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries.
 
 
Spanish IV
 
Grades: 12
Duration: Year
Prerequisite: B- or better in Spanish III and teacher permission.
 
A course designed to strengthen students' skills in combining the grammatical structures they have learned previously for use in real-life situations.  Students will have opportunities to improve their skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through a variety of activities and projects.  Additional advanced grammatical structures and vocabulary will be learned within the context of the history and cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries.
